| What differentiates one sub from another? Usable displacement is one of the major factors. There is no replacement for displacement when it comes to subs. Generating output is a simple function of moving air so the driver that can move more of it... wins.
When we design a driver, we look at three areas that affect the non-linear distortion of the device. The motor or magnetic field linearity, the inductance with power, frequency, and cone position and the suspension linearity with stroke. Those three factors are balanced and optimized in the design.
Our XBL^2 motor is what is responsible for the linear magnetic field strength as the cone moves. Without linear magnetic strength, the force acting on the cone would decrease as the cone left rest position. The result.... distortion and loss of output or compression. Another important aspect of the motor is the inductance and how it changes with several variables. Our advanced 2-part Copper/Aluminum inductance ring helps us to keep inductance from changing as the driver operates once again...lowering distortion.
The final component that influences distortion is the suspension linearity. The suspension should control cone movement, damp and control over-excursion and remain as linear as possible over the full capability of the driver. We optimize our suspensions with Klippel analysis and advanced design tools. We stitch the tinsel into our spiders to prevent tinsel slap, and to prevent detachment under overload conditions. Stitched tinsels also has the effect of keeping suspension self-noise low at full stroke. One other important design factor you will notice is that we use dual voice coils, with tinsel stitched in a symmetric pattern on both sides of the spider assembly. This keeps the tinsels affect on suspension linearity to a minimum.
